Stanley

 Location

At the southernmost tip of Hong Kong Island, Stanley is situated on a peninsula between Repulse Bay and Tai Tam. Although it has retained its low-rise fishing village appeal, Stanley is one of the most populated districts on the South Side, and is also very popular with visitors to the famous market. Many residents here feel they live in a real community with a more leisurely pace of life away from the noise and pollution of the city.

 Accommodation

The area is a mix of older and newer properties and has low and mid-rise apartments and houses, many enjoying full sea views across the bay. Both Stanley and Chung Hom Kok boast low-rise luxury housing with more developments being built in recent years providing residents with pools, tennis courts and club houses.

 Transport

This area is well supplied with public buses and taxis are plentiful, but many residents consider a private car to be a necessity. There is no MTR connection to the south side of the Island at all.

 Shopping

Stanley is famous for its market, selling everything from fruit and vegetables to paintings, souvenirs, good quality children¡¯s clothing and adult clothing, attracting tourists and locals alike. The new Stanley Plaza houses an excellent ¡°expat-friendly¡± Park¡¯n¡¯Shop Super Store as well as several smaller businesses such as banks, pharmacies, post office, beauty salons and hairdressers. There is a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and bars across Stanley catering to all tastes.

 Medical

There are no hospitals in this area, the nearest private hospital is the Adventist in Mid-Levels and the closest Government Hospital is the Queen Mary in Pokfulam. There are doctors¡¯ surgeries and a physiotherapist in Chung Hom Kok or a short drive away in Repulse Bay.

 Education

The Hong Kong International School, which follows the US curriculum, has its middle and senior school campus in Tai Tam, and its primary campus at South Bay. Recently some international kindergartens have opened in the Redhill Plaza, just a few minutes¡¯ drive from Stanley, and others are available in Repulse Bay. Students for the English Schools Foundation would attend Bradbury (primary) and South Island (senior) schools. The whole area is covered by school buses from other international schools.

 Recreation

Some of the newer residential complexes offer a swimming pool. The beaches at both Stanley and Chung Hom Kok are very popular and can be crowded on the weekends and during the summer. The main Dragon Boat racing in early June takes place off Stanley main beach and it becomes packed with junks and spectators. The American Club is situated looking out over the cliffs of Stanley with tennis courts, swimming pool, spa, gym and restaurants. There are some excellent restaurants along the waterfront in Stanley and on weekends the road is closed allowing for al fresco dining, giving the feel of a Mediterranean beachfront.
