Location
On the eastern and south-eastern coast of the New Territories, Sai Kung and
Clear Water Bay offer a relaxed lifestyle in a green and tranquil environment.
The area is popular with both expatriates and local Chinese - the main
attraction is being away from the hustle and bustle of the city, with less
pollution and more open space. Despite living ¡°off the Island¡±, residents of
the area claim it offers a slower, friendlier lifestyle and better living
environment. As the infrastructure in this relatively new area takes shape it
is becoming a more popular option to living on the Island, although the commute
time to the city is longer so owning a car would be recommended.
Accommodation
Properties are low-rise apartments and houses often referred to as
Spanish-style villas. A typical ¡°villa¡± is 3 storeys tall and 2,100 square feet
in size, with three or four bedrooms, a garden or roof terrace, and a garage;
most are set within a development with swimming pool, and often with more
extensive facilities. Larger developments in the area include Floral Villas,
Marina Cove, Silverstrand, and The Portofino. Houses outside developments can
be in remote locations where security may be an issue. There are no real
high-rise developments and properties tend to be older. Rentals are
considerably lower than on Hong Kong Island.
Transport
Both Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay have a network of public buses and light
buses connecting to the MTR at Choi Hung, Hang Hau and Tseung Kwan O, and to
Shatin. The Tseung Kwan O and Eastern Harbour Tunnels have reduced the time
taken to drive to Hong Kong Island, although for many the drawback to the area
is the longer commute time. A car is really considered a necessity as taking
buses and public transport can be a lengthy process.
Shopping
There are banking and postal facilities in Sai Kung and the newly opened Metro
City complex in Hang Hau. The area is well served with supermarkets, local wet
markets, beauty salons, hair dressers, bakeries, furniture and clothing outlets
plus the famous ¡°Harrods¡± hardware store in Sai Kung that supplies everything
you can think of from nuts and bolts to umbrellas and candles.
Medical
The recently opened Public Hospital in Tsuen Kwan O has a casualty unit and all
the very latest in equipment. There are doctors¡¯ surgeries both in Clearwater
Bay and Sai Kung. Dentists and pharmacies are available in Sai Kung.
Education
The English Schools¡¯ Foundation has a primary school at Clear Water Bay (senior
students travel to King George V in Homantin). School buses also connect with
the Australian International School at Kowloon Tong, and other International
Schools in Kowloon and on the Island. There are several independently-run
English and Chinese pre-schools and kindergartens in the vicinity, and the area
is home to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Recreation
The Sai Kung Country Park is a popular destination at weekends, offering
walking trails and picnic sites, and the public sports arena in Sai Kung has a
large swimming pool, tennis and squash courts. Sailors are entertained at
Shelter Cove Yacht Club and Hebe Haven Yacht Club; both have moorings and offer
sailing courses to non-members. The Clear Water Bay Golf and Country Club
commands a fantastic position on a peninsula, and is one of the most
prestigious clubs in Hong Kong. There is also a public golf course at Kau Sai
Chau, a short sampan ride from Sai Kung. There are lots of restaurants in Sai
Kung, with numerous typical seafood restaurants along the harbour front,
together with Italian, Thai, Indian and Asian cuisines, many also providing
take-away/delivery service.
