Repulse Bay and South Bay

Hongkong Map
Location
On the South Side of Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay Road stretches from Hong
Kong Parkview to Chung Hom Kok, along the Mediterranean style coastline. The
area, which began as a resort, is a prestigious residential area with a
distinctly suburban feel, and is particularly popular amongst American
expatriate families. Many properties have superb views of the South China Sea
and the large sandy beach, which is the longest in Hong Kong.
Accommodation
There is a wide range of accommodation from colonial-style low-rise apartments,
to modern high-rise developments with extensive recreational facilities, and
developments of townhouses. Many properties enjoy full sea views across the bay
and South China Sea. Notable developments include The Repulse Bay (with the
Feng Shui ¡°hole¡± allowing the dragon on the mountain to view the sea), and Hong
Kong Parkview which comprises eighteen towers of apartments.
Transport
Repulse Bay is well serviced by public buses and the smaller public light buses
and taxis are in abundance at all times of the day and night. There is no MTR
service to the south side of the Island. Many of the larger complexes have
their own mini-buses that transport residents to Central throughout the day and
early evening.
Shopping
The distinctive development of The Repulse Bay, with the old Repulse Bay hotel
as its frontage, provides a Wellcome supermarket, ATM, dry-cleaners and
florist, as well as a choice of restaurants. More shops and amenities can be
found at the Dairy Farm Shopping Centre on Beach Road. It is also just a 5-10
minute drive to the popular Stanley market.
Medical
There are a doctor¡¯s surgery, dentist and physiotherapist within the Repulse
Bay shopping complex. The nearest private hospital is the Adventist or Matilda
hospitals, and the nearest public hospital is the Queen Mary Hospital in
Pokfulam.
Education
The Hong Kong International School junior campus is located at South Bay,
making it a very popular with American families. Repulse Bay is in the ESF
catchment area for Bradbury (junior) and South Island School (seniors). Within
the shopping complexes in Repulse Bay there are International kindergartens and
pre-schools. Securing a place in any of these schools can be difficult as the
demand is high for them all. Early application is recommended.
Recreation
Many of the housing developments in the area have recreational facilities for
the use of residents. Both The Repulse Bay and Hong Kong Parkview offer
membership of their facilities to non-residents for a monthly fee. The American
Club is located at Tai Tam and the Cricket Club is close to Hong Kong Parkview.
Middle Island Yacht Club is to the east and is part of the Royal Hong Kong
Yacht Club. Sailing courses are run from here and open to the public. Wind
surfing and water skiing are popular activities on the weekends. The beach,
which is the longest on Hong Kong Island, is wide and sandy and patrolled by
lifeguards. Ocean Park is a short taxi ride away in Aberdeen and has many
attractions for the whole family. Be warned it becomes very busy during
weekends and public holidays with long queues all day for the popular rides and
shows. There are many restaurants in Repulse Bay including ¡°The Verandah¡± which
is one of Hong Kong¡¯s¡¯ top restaurants.
