Location
Located between Happy Valley in the east and Pok Fu Lam in the west, Mid Levels
covers a long strip of hillside above Central and the Western district with
many apartments having spectacular harbour views. Mid-levels is considered by
most as a high-rise and high-density residential area popular with both expats
and local Chinese. It is very convenient for business people being close to the
city but also boasting lovely tree-lined public walks leading down to Central
or up to the Peak, plus being close to the Botanical and Zoological gardens.
Popular residential areas include Stubbs Road to the east, Macdonnell Road,
Kennedy Road and Bowen Road in Midlevels Central, and Robinson and Conduit
Roads to the west of the district. Prestigious addresses include Tregunter
Path, May Road and Magazine Gap leading to the Peak.
Accommodation
Life in Mid Levels is city living, and accommodation is predominantly within
high-rise apartment blocks, many enjoying harbour views. Older developments
offer spacious apartments but with restricted views, whilst newer complexes
generally offer better recreational facilities and expansive views within
smaller units. Apartments on high floors often command spectacular harbour
views, but lower floors may be somewhat more obstructed.
Transport
The Mid Levels pedestrian escalator, the worldĄŻs longest escalator, is
operational between 6am and midnight and connects Western Mid Levels to
Central. A network of public buses and light buses connect with MTR stations at
Central, Sheung Wan, Wanchai and Causeway Bay as well as the Star Ferry and
Cross-Harbour Tunnel. The Peak Tram makes several stops on its way from Central
to the Peak including Kennedy Road and May Road. Private parking is scarce and
costly but living here means it is really not necessary to own a car.
Shopping
Most neighbourhoods have good local shops catering for everyday needs,
including supermarkets, dry-cleaners, and convenience stores. The Soho area is
famous for its many restaurants and bars and is easily accessed when taking the
escalator home in the evening; choices include Indian, Thai, American, Italian,
Greek, Portuguese and Asian, amongst others, and give you eat-in, take-away or
delivery options.
Medical
The Canossa and Adventist Hospitals are located in Mid-Levels and are
considered to be two of the top private hospitals in Hong Kong. Both have
accident and emergency departments. Doctors, dentists, and physiotherapists are
easily accessed in the Central district.
Education
There are three English Schools Foundation schools (ESF) in the area: Bradbury
Junior School, Glenealy Junior School and Island Senior School. These follow
the UK curriculum. There are also English and Chinese kindergartens, including
Montessori. The Jewish School, French International School, Sear Rogers
International School are also found in this area. All areas in the Mid-levels
are covered by school buses.
Recreation
Many of the housing complexes offer on-site facilities such as swimming pool,
gym, and childrenĄŻs play-area. The LadiesĄŻ Recreation Club is located on Old
Peak Road and has very good facilities but can be difficult and costly to join.
There are public tennis courts on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, which can be booked
one week in advance. The Botanical and Zoological gardens are lovely open
parklands where children can run and have fun outdoors. There are numerous
paths for jogging and walking the whole way along Mid-Levels and are very
popular over weekends with local and expat families enjoying the views and the
outdoors.
The popular entertainment areas of Lan Kwai Fong and Soho, with a wide range of
restaurants, cafes and bars, are easily accessible from Midlevels.
