Kowloon & Tsim Sha Tsui
View
Hongkong Map
Location
Situated at the southern end of the Kowloon Peninsula, Tsim Sha Tsui is
primarily a business and shopping centre. The waterfront offers spectacular
views of the Hong Kong skyline and is an excellent spot from which to watch the
frequent fireworks displays. Many of Hong Kong¡¯s most prestigious hotels are
here, including the Sheraton, Intercontinental, and the world-famous Peninsula
Hotel.
Accommodation
Think of Tsim Sha Tsui and you will think of shops and crowds with very little
housing. Indeed, shoppers and tourists more often frequent this area than
expatriates looking for decent housing. Quality accommodation is few and far
between although many new high-rise developments are being built along the
Airport Express line. Area such as Kings Park and Kowloon Tong offer grand
low-rise apartments and houses.
Transport
The area is well served by public transport and the MTR line. The famous Star
Ferry, much loved by all in Hong Kong, departs from Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom
ferry piers and takes about 7 minutes with ferries running frequently; it is
also very cheap. The KCR connects Kowloon with the New Territories, and the
Airport Express line connects Hong Kong Island and Kowloon with Chek Lap Kok
Airport. China Ferries can be taken from here to the mainland. Ocean Liners
dock at the Ocean Terminal alongside Star Ferry Pier. Taxis are plentiful and
inexpensive.
Shopping
This is a shopper¡¯s paradise with everything being sold from high fashion brand
name shops to copy brands. Tailors, jewelers, department and furniture stores,
electronic and photographic equipment shops seem to be on every corner, sports
shops and supermarkets are abundant. A word of warning, beware of pickpockets
and fake photographic and electrical equipment, be sure you are getting the
real thing. There are numerous markets in this area most notably the Flower
market, Ladies market, Bird Street market, Jade market and Temple Street night
market.
Medical
There are many doctors¡¯ surgeries, dentists, and physiotherapists in this area.
Public government run hospitals are the Caritas, Prince of Wales in Shatin,
Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth and the United Christian Hospitals. Private
Hospitals are Hong Kong Baptist, St. Teresa¡¯s and the Evangel Hospital.
Education
To the north of Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Tong has a large number of
International, local and ESF schools and many international Kindergartens. The
American International School, Australian International School, Yew Chung
International School, Delia School of Canada (junior), Shatin College (junior
and senior) ESF, Kowloon Junior ESF, Beacon Hill ESF, and King George V
(senior) ESF are the most popular schools frequented by expatriates.
Recreation
There are several sports clubs in Kowloon namely the Kowloon Cricket Club,
United Services Recreation Club, Chinese Recreation Club, and The Pacific Club
to name a few. There are many bars, night clubs and hotels with fine dining all
around you, some providing spectacular views over Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong
Island. The main recreation here is shopping, of course!
