Location
On the western side of Hong Kong Island, Aberdeen was originally a fishing
village and has now developed into a high-rise, high-density neighbourhood.
Residents are predominantly Chinese, although many expatriates live in the
large development at South Horizons on Ap Lei Chau, just across the harbour
from Aberdeen.
Accommodation
Most accommodation is within high-rise towers of smaller apartments (up to
1,000 square feet). South Horizons, popular with expatriates and locals, is a
large development of 34 high rise towers of apartments ranging from 630 to
1,100 square feet.
Transport
There is currently no MTR link to Aberdeen, although there are plans to extend
the line to this area in the next few years. There is a network of public buses
and light buses, many of which travel through the Aberdeen Tunnel to Causeway
Bay and Central.
Shopping
Shopping There are many local shops offering a range of services, as well as
wet markets and larger supermarkets, and the Marina Square complex at South
Horizons. For furniture and accessories visit Horizon Plaza, a large warehouse
at Ap Lei Chau.
Medical
Medical There are doctorsĄŻ practices in both Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau. The
nearest private hospital is the Adventist or Matilda hospitals, and the nearest
public hospital is the Queen Mary in Pokfulam.
Education
Education Both the Candian and the Singapore International Schools are located
in Aberdeen. The Hong Kong International SchoolĄŻs lower campus is in Repulse
Bay, about a 15 minute drive away. The English Schools Foundation has a junior
and secondary school at Pokfulam and the South Island School (secondary) at
Shouson Hill. Kellett School is another international school located in
Pokfulam, and there are Chinese and English-speaking kindergartens in the
immediate vicinity.
Recreation
Recreation The Hong Kong Country Club is to be found at the end of Shouson
Hill Road. The famous theme park Ocean Park is nearby, and beaches are located
at Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay. Most restaurants in the neighbourhood are
Chinese, with the most famous being the landmark Jumbo Floating Restaurant
within the Aberdeen harbour and typhoon shelter.
